When moving into a new house, your task does not end when you pack up your old place. Not to mention the fun filled unpacking ahead!
Before you settle in and start enjoying youe new home, there are a few important things you'll want to take care of first. Taking care of these items while the house is still empty, can make the transition easier, safer, and much less stressful.
Change the Locks
This doesn't make you paranoid, it makes you smart, since you don't know how many people have copies, including previous owners, contractors, neighbors, or service providers. For peace of mind, change or re-key all exterior door locks as soon as you move in. Don't forget garage door opener, keypad codes, smart locks, and security system codes. A fresh start means knowing exactly who has access to your home.
Deep Clean Before You Unpack
An empty house is the perfect opportunity for a thorough cleaning. This includes floors, carpets, cabinets, closets, bathrooms, appliances, windows, and other areas that will become difficult to reach once you move in your furniture.
Locate Important Systems and Shutoffs
Find the main water shutoff, electrical panel, gas shutoff, HVAC system, and water heater before an emergency occurs. Label shutoff valves and electrical breakers if needed.
Check Safety Equipment and Make Repairs
Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, replace batteries, and confirm that fire extinguishers are accessible. Take care of small repairs, such as dripping faucets, loose handles, damaged outlets, sticking doors, or wall damage, before the house fills with furniture and boxes.
Document the Home and Update Your Information
Photograph and video the home's condition before moving everything in, including floors, wall, appliances, fixtures, and windows. Keep these records for insurance and future reference.
Also, update your address with the post office, banks, insurance companies, DMV, employer, subscriptions, and other important accounts. Pre-pare a first night emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, medications, chargers, toiletries, basic tools, and other essentials.
